Lawrence Park Lawn Bowling & Croquet Club

Lawrence Park Lawn Bowling & Croquet Club
Lawrence Park Lawn Bowling & Croquet Club was founded in the spring of 1912 and has been operating at the same location in the Alexander Muir Ravine ever since. Formerly, it was an exclusive “men’s only club” for Lawrence Park Estate members. In 1915, a women area was built, but there is no longer any distinction. In 1923, the Club was transferred to the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Toronto. Tennis was a member of the Club at the time, but it split apart in 1933. Croquet was first played in the year 2000. The club is a member of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association (OLBA – district 12), a Bowls Canada-affiliated organization, as well as a Croquet Canada member club.

Toronto Gaels sprang from the ashes of the old Garryowen club, with players like Billy Millar, Billy Gilroy, and Joe Matthews at the helm in 1987. Other former Garryowen men, like the famous and much-missed Tommy White and Paddy Callan, were instrumental in the formation and expansion of the Toronto Gaels throughout the years. The club has had a good first 30 years, fielding competitive teams from the beginning. The club was successful early on, winning a handful of championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
