Deer + Almond
Deer + almond is all about great food, fun times and building a strong community that serves tapas-style dishes, perfect for sharing in a relaxed and comfy environment. Formerly of Fresh Cafe, Chef Mandel has surrounded himself with a warm and experienced team, transforming the quaint space into one of the most acclaimed slow food restaurants in the city. Having spent more than half of his life in kitchens, he got his start at the haute-cuisine restaurant, Glutton’s under-celebrated Japanese chef, Makoto Ono. In 2010, he paired up with chef and artist, Cyrus Smith and brought the term “pop-up” to Winnipeg, hosting “secret dinners” to explore their skills and ideas. In 2011, Mandel opened deer + almond, giving him a stage to bring his newest concepts to Winnipeg food lovers.

“My favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. Always so impressed with the unique dishes and flavours. Great spot for a date night or a small group of friends! My favourite dish that they seem to have often is the beet and orange salad. The semifreddo for dessert is fantastic.” – Nicole B

“I miss your restaurant the most after moving out of province – a little nook of delicious vegan food. The quality of ingredients and preparation of food is perfect. Last I was here in 2019, I split the taco bowl and mushroom soup with my fiance. We shared a raw caramel cheesecake which blew us away – best vegan cheesecake we have ever had. The oat milk matcha latte was so comforting and the beetroot latte that was recommended for my fiance was lovely as well. I highly recommend this place <3” – Heather M
