Workshop Studios
Workshop Studios believes that art and creative spaces are vital to vibrant and healthy communities. As they recognize the lack of accessible facilities and affordable resources for artists and small business owners in Calgary, they set out to create an inclusive space to foster collaboration and enrich culture in the city. In 2017, the team signed a lease in Inglewood’s historic Brass Foundry building and transformed a very rough industrial bay into the plant and light-filled studio space of their dreams.
Workshop Studios’ 25 open-concept studios and 28 ceramic member cupboards are occupied by 62 artists representing a wide range of practices. They run up to seven pottery classes per week and regular Date Night events, hosting up to 96 students in addition to those attending private lessons and guest workshops. Behind each of these offerings is a talented, hardworking team of artists and entrepreneurs flexing diverse skill sets as instructors, managers, and techs.

Fire Escape Studio
Fire Escape originally opened its doors in 1996 in an old building at the heart of Mount Royal Beltline. Their studio was started by Jacqui and J.D. Esler, trendsetters in the contemporary pottery painting movement in the city, as it was one of the first and is one of the longest currently running and functioning ceramic studios. Their studio was also one of the earliest to adopt lead-free and non-toxic glazes.
Fire Escape Studio moved to Bowness in 2010. Since then they have experienced the warmth of a community that feels like a small town, in the middle of the big city. Fire Escape is now casting a number of their own items. In making their own bisqueware, they are able to do a number of things. They are now able to offer lower prices since they are saving on import fees. They can now show students how to make their own entirely original ceramic items. By working with ceramics in clay form, every piece is fully modifiable from its original basic form. They are able to bring a bigger selection of paintable and customizable items through their ever-expanding plaster mold collection.
