Art Gallery of Alberta
It is a central role for the Art Gallery of Alberta to collect works of art as it is an active research facility and public resource for the Alberta community. AGA has acquired more than 6,000 artworks since it was established in 1924.
Primarily, the strength of AGA’s contemporary collection lies on Canadian sculpture and abstract painting. Other collections include historical and contemporary photography which started in 1977 and now counts to 1,500 photographs. They also maintain comprehensive collection of prints by the famous print maker of the 18th century, Thomas Bewick. Their contemporary collections include works of Alberta artists like Allen Ball, Catherine Burgess, Chris Cran and Douglas Haynes to name a few, as well as photographers Orest Semchishen and Hubert Hohn.

Bearclaw Gallery
The fine art collection of Bearclaw Gallery showcases the creativity and authenticity of Canadian Native and First Nations histories, traditions and culture. Alberta Craft Council advocates, promotes and develops fine craft in Alberta. It is the Provincial Arts Service Organization. They have two roles, first is to support heritage and contemporary crafts which has significant contribution to the city’s culture. Secondly, to develop a craft sector with sustainable, viable, skilled and creative businesses, people and networks.
The gallery started its operation in 1980. It is the biggest operating public gallery in Alberta which has two locations, Edmonton and Calgary. This gallery organizes 15-20 exhibitions every year working with more than 150 rising and established craft artists. They are dedicated to informing and educating the public.
